Principal Highway Engineering Lead - Tampa , FL

Our client, a respected engineering consultancy, seeks a Principal Highway Engineering Lead to guide large-scale roadway and highway initiatives. This role offers the opportunity to shape transportation systems while mentoring talented engineers and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. 

 

 

Key responsibilities for this role will include (but are not limited to): 

 

 

  • Directing the planning, analysis, and production of designs, specifications, and documentation for major roadway and highway projects. 
  • Managing both traditional and design-build project delivery processes for state and local transportation agencies. 
  • Acting as the primary liaison for client communications, ensuring their needs and expectations are met. 
  • Coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, including subconsultants, to achieve seamless project execution. 
  • Overseeing and performing quality assurance to maintain high standards in project deliverables. 
  • Guiding and mentoring engineering staff, fostering a culture of learning and professional growth. 
  • Supporting business development efforts through proposal preparation, client engagement, and marketing initiatives. 

 

 

Required and desired skillsets, experience, and qualifications for this role:  

 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program. 
  • At least 20 years of professional experience in roadway and highway engineering. 
  • Florida PE license. 
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing intersections, arterials, interstates, and interchanges. 
  • Proficiency in design tools such as MicroStation, Geopak, and/or OpenRoads Designer. 
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. 
  • Experience with Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build project delivery methods. 
  • Engineer of Record experience for FDOT projects, including complex interchange and urban arterial designs. 
  • Leadership experience within FDOT District Wide or Continuing Services Contracts. 
  • Established professional connections within the FDOT network. 
  • Familiarity with Bentley OpenRoads Designer and advanced interchange/intersection design. 
  • Ability to utilize Excel spreadsheets, create Excel trackers, and be able to use Word and PowerPoint for reporting/presentations via teams or in person.
